Major renovation of House at Mullumbimby NSW

Over the last 12 months, Sam has Project Managed and Owner-Built a residential property at Mullumbimby, NSW. Josh Spillane, our architect, worked closely with us on the project, and we are very happy with the results! Sam plans to live here and concentrate more on his fine art and print-making. A lovely part of the world to kick back in! See the "before" "during" and "after" shots for a quick synopsis of what's been happening for the last 12 months.

  • Original old 60's house Gordon St Mullumbimby June 2010.

We felt the house had a very "nana" look and needed a kick to bring it into the 21st century. In addition, in true 50's ignoring the environment style, the aspect was completely wrong - the room which got the most sun was the laundry!!! We were after a much more simple, Japanese feel - and unfortunately, the roses had to go...too much spraying and maintenance for this climate anyway.
  • Gordon St new frontage April 2011

There is still work to be completed: front gate, planting in front of fence. I suppose houses always take about 12 months to 5 years to finish the way you would like them.
  • Start of renovation Sept 2010. .

The house was double clad in aluminium siding and weatherboard. We soon discovered rain had rotted the original timber weatherboards and bearers.
  • Framing in progress Nov 2010

It took over 4 months of work to sort out the footings and bearers - but finally we were out of the ground and the framing started.
  • Rear of house

This is the northern aspect with 2x4 metre bi-fold doors opening up onto deck with pool. The reflection of the water on the ceiling of the lounge/family room is just one of the wonderful surprises the house has given us. I will take more interior and Japanese garden shots soon.
